Tumpinyeri Growers

The word Tumpinyeri is from the Ngarrindjeri language. Tump means life and inyeri means belonging to. Belonging to life is how we see ourselves and as growers we use regenerative farming practices to honour this. Following the NASAA Organics guidelines we care for the soil, water and air in a holistic and respectful way. We promote and encourage biodiversity which in turn aids us if things become unbalanced. Tumpinyeri Growers understand that healthy food comes from heathy soils and thriving ecosystems. Caring for country is the only way we can truly care for ourselves and all life.

What is share farming?

Tumpinyeri Growers leases land from Captains Creek along with water rights, machinery, irrigation, greenhouse and grants access to infrastructure.

This share farming arrangement is a mutually beneficial agreement which has allowed us to enter into farming without having to own land or machinery while assisting our property owners by providing rent and people power to keep the rest of the farm operational.

Our landholders, Steph and Carla Hodgins-Mays, along with Steph’s husband Ogy, understand that we are at the beginning of our farming journey and have been very supportive throughout our first season.

Having aligned values and ethics has made for a great working relationship and we hope our share farming story may inspire others to grow ethical food on other people’s land.

The Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance (AFSA) has been instrumental in helping us navigate through our share farming journey. Their activities support and encourage new farming ventures on existing farms and underutilised land, and help new farmers to develop skills and tools for successful farm enterprises.

Check out AFSA’s Farming On Other People’s Land (FOOPL) project for more information and help with share farming.

Also see the amazing work they do in supporting food sovereignty and rights of Indigenous peoples through their First Peoples First commitment.
